Biennial of Sustainable Architecture

On 13 November 2008, Habitat Futura held the First Biennial of Sustainable Architecture at the Pedrera in Barcelona, during which 12 exemplary projects – references for sustainable architecture and construction on both national and international levels – were presented. The aim was to show how architecture and construction should develop towards a more sustainable mindset. Over 300 professionals attended the conferences and were able to visit the parallel exhibition where the works were on display, all of them genuine examples of innovation, design, and sustainable and economic development, with big savings on energy through the use of renewables and ecological materials.

The exhibition displayed models of the following projects: Metropol Parasol (Seville), Bulevar Bioclimático (Madrid), Ecourban (Barcelona), Terminal 4 (Madrid), la Sede Andaluza de la Energía (Seville), Centro de Recursos Ambientales (Madrid), and the Ensanche Sur de Alcorcón (Madrid).

The presentation was given by both international and national architects: Roger Schickedantz of William McDonough & Partner, Ken Yeang and Jürgen Mayer as international representatives, and César-Ruiz Larrea, Noberto Beirak, Ramón Betrán, Manuel Ruisánchez, José Antonio Torrecilla of Despacho Lamela, Juan Laguna of Rogers Stirk Harbour+Partners and Belinda Tato of Ecosistema Urban as national representatives.

The ultimate goal is to demonstrate the need – essential in times of crisis – for responsible consumption and a better use of resources, and to adopt new forms of construction that take the environment into account to a much greater degree.
